The route of Andes Hummingbird

In three days you will visit the most representative places for the sighting of hummingbirds in the Andes mountain range. This will make you vibrate with each photograph you take of these colorful and iridescent birds. On average you can observe up to 10 different species per day depending on the date of the year, for a minimum total of 30 species at the end of the three days.

Hummingbirds are the jewel in the birdwatching crown in Colombia, with a total of 165 species from 343 species ranging from southern Alaska to “Tierra del Fuego” in Argentina. 16 of them are endemic and 96 are almost endemic or in danger. This bird family is the second largest in the world.

The ecological importance of the hummingbirds lies in their pollination function, where they visit innumerable types of flowers, so the anatomy of their peaks vary according to the flora of each habitat from sea level to the snow line of the Andes. One of the favorite places of hummingbirds is the cloud forest of the subtropical mountains, where the density of these birds depends on the number different types of flowers per square meter. Those are the conditions where it is really easy to see this small bird.

Hummingbirds have captured the attention of scientists, birders and photographers among others, for their ability to fly in all kinds of directions, even face up, for their striking colors and their ability to save energy in ecosystems with hostile climates such as páramo.

These sightings will be made in private reserves and will be the dessert of your  bird watching day in each region.
