Bojonawi Nature Reserve in Puerto Carreño
Bojonawi, a natural reserve of the civil society is situated in the Orinoco basin of the state of Vichada in eastern Colombia. Bojonawi´s protected ecosystems include tropical savannahs and forests that extend for more than 5,000 hectares. In the reserve you will be able to explore the scientific research and conservation efforts being undertaking to protect pink dolphins, otters, jaguars, pumas, turtles, caimans and many bird species, amongst others that live in this region.
In Bojonawi and its surrounding areas you will be able to visit the incredible rock formation of the Tepuyes of the Guyanese shield, eat the local dish of “mamona” and experience the authentic culture of the “Los Llanos” region. You will be in for a real experience in nature, biodiversity and culture.
Day 1: Arrival to Puerto Carreño and transfer to Bojonawi
Arrival in the Germán Olano Airport of Puerto Carreño, welcome by Bojonawi´s staff and transfer to the docks on the Orinoco river. We will take the reserve´s private boat and head upriver for 30 minutes to the scientific station of Bojonawi to have lunch and settle in the accommodation. In the afternoon we will visit the “El Pañuelo” lagoon in search of pink dolphins, turtles, caimans, and howling monkeys amongst others.
Day 2: The savanah and the tepuyes
At dawn break we will begin our treck into the savanah. Depending on your interest we will visit the “La Campana” Tepuy or the “Caño Verde” stream. Keep an eye for the great views and for wildlife. We will have a picnick this day before starting our way back towards the accomodation.
Day 3: “Raudal de Ventanas”, beaches and streams
In the morning we will head by boat to the “Caño Negro” stream which is especially rich in bird species. By midday we will head towards the “Raudal de Ventanas” rapids in the Orinoco river for great scenery and fantastic photo opportunities. This will be the Ame to enjoy the Orinoco´s beautiful beaches. After a late lunch, we will head back to Bojonawi and prepare for a night excursion in search of electric eels, mata mata turtles, amongst other fascinating species.
Day 4: Visit to the mouth of the Bita river and return to Puerto Carreño
Before heading back to Puerto Carreño to take our flight, we will stop and visit the mouth of the Bita river in search of the dolphins and other wildlife. We will have an opportunity to taste the typical dishes of Puerto Carreño and shop in the indigenous market before getting to the Germán Olano airport where we will finish our visit.
Dates: dry season / summer (November – May), rainy season / winter (June – October).
Lodging: Scientific station of the Bojonawi Natural Reserve in the river banks of the Orinoco. Availability of up to 6 guests (3 rooms: 1 queen size bed and 4 single beds). If the traveller wishes, it is possible to camp.
